MARVIN/MCLAY MODEL

Marvin/McClay

On a site with 360-degree views, the center, where living, dining, kitchen and library are located, is laid out as a radial plan wrapping an enclosed entrance courtyard. An angled stone wall serves as the main spine of the building and anchors the home to the land. It concurrently marks the winter solstice sunrise and summer solstice sunset. The four cardinal directions determine the location of a free standing cylindrical office (north), an infinity edge pool (south), the main fireplace (west) and the vehicular entrance to the site (east). The master bedroom suite, guesthouse, garage and support spaces are placed at pinwheel locations off the stone wall to complete the composition. The overall intent was to gesture to Anasazi architecture in an abstract modernist way while respecting the underlying order found in this ancient architecture of the southwest and its link to the cycles of the sun.
